Hair is the most versatile and a permanent accessory of the human species. Hair gives frame to face, complements your life-style and accentuates fashion-appeal Actually, it’s totally normal to lose some hair each day. Most people lose about 50 to 100 hairs every day – and it’s a good thing, because we’d all look like huge hairballs if we didn’t! Normally, when hair falls out, new hairs start forming in the same place as the old ones. But when someone really has hair loss, the hairs don’t grow back. Or they do grow, but there aren’t enough of them to take the place of what’s already fallen out.
A number of things can cause excessive hair loss. For example, about 3 or 4 months after an illness or a major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. This hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and is temporary.
Hormonal problems may cause hair loss. If your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, your hair may fall out. Many women notice hair loss about three months after they’ve had a baby. Some medicines can cause hair loss eg. Birth control pills and antidepressants. This type of hair loss improves when you stop taking the medicine. Children may have hair loss caused by a fungal infection of the scalp.
The term “common baldness” usually means male-pattern baldness. Male-pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in men. Men who have this type of hair loss usually have inherited the trait. Men who start losing their hair at an early age tend to develop more extensive baldness. In male-pattern baldness, hair loss typically results in a receding hairline and baldness on the top of the head.
Alopecia Aerata is another condition where one starts losing hair in patches. Cause for it is not clear, it is thought to be a misfired immune response of the body.
Phases of hair growth
Hair growth is cyclical and not continuous. Anagen hair are growning hair, which grown for 3 years and account for 90% of the total hair. Catagen hair are in a transitional phase, which last for 1-2 weeks. Telogen hair are resting hair, which continue in this stage for 3-4 months. Afterwards they are pushed out by the underneath hair, or combing pulls them out.
There are many mis-conceptions regarding hair fall. Let us see what is normal hair fall. There are 1 lakh hair on scalp. Every person loses 40-100 hair per day. When it exceeds 120 it is considered abnormal. Generally, if you find more than 40 hair on your comb or on pillow or in the bathroom, your hair loss is more than normal.
Causes of hair fall:-
Heredity determines characteristics of colour, thick or thin, straight or curly. Premature greying and baldness is determined by genes.
Drugs like anti-cancer, blood-pressure lowering, oral-pills can cause hair fall.
Trauma (injury) in the form of tight-winding, pulling can aggravate hair loss.
Hormones like thyroid-disorders can make hair brittle and sparse. Generally, estrogen (female sex hormone) stimulates hair growth and androgen (male sex hormone) inhibits hair growth. Therefore, you see more bald men than women.
During pregnancy hair condition improves. Hair loss is seen 2-4 months after delivery.
Crash diet leading to weight loss.
Baldness (Androgeneic Alopecia)
Baldness occurs both in men and women as their age advances.
The baldness which occurs in men is called “male pattern baldness” and is characterized by receding hairline and loss of hair on the crown area. It is generally experienced around and from age of 25 years.
The baldness which occurs in women is called “female pattern baldness” and is characterized by overall thinning of hair on scalp and little loss of hair on crown or hairline. This can begin at puberty but usually occurs after menopause.
The cause for both types of baldness is attributed to genetic factors which have been inherited.
Alopecia Areata
Small circular patches of baldness start appearing on the scalp and hair re-grows in these patches after few days. This is called as alopecia areata. Persons who are affected by this condition will have repeated hair fall and regrowth of the above mentioned pattern.
In severe condition total loss of scalp hair occurs. This is called as “alopecia totalis” .Some times complete loss of body hair also occurs. This is called as “alopecia universalis”. In few people the hair re-grows . But the hair loss may occur once again. This is an autoimmune disease.
HEALTH TIPS FOR MAINTAINING HAIRS HEALTHLY
| OIL IS GOOD FOR YOUR HAIR | |
| Massage scalp with warm coconut or castor oil twice a week. Massage scalp with finger tips in a circular motion for at least half an hour. Leave on the oil over-night and shampoo the following morning. This prevents hair from becoming dry and prevents dandruff and hair fall by improving circulation and strengthening hair roots. | |
| VITAMIN DEFICIENCY CAN CAUSE HAIR FALL! | |
| Lack of vitamins too can lead to hair loss and pre-mature greying of hair. Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables primarily leafy vegetables will help curb hair loss. Spinach (palak) and fenugreek (methi) are strongly recommended for healthy hair. Indian gooseberry (amla) and mangoes are hair-friendly fruit that one must eat in abundance (go easy on the mangoes though). | |
| EGGS TO PREVENT HAIR FALL! | |
| Beat two eggs and add two tablespoons of water to it. Wet the hair and apply the egg mixture over the hair. Now massage your scalp and let the mixture on for ten minutes to fifteen minutes. Then rinse the hair with lukewarm water. | |
| AMLA – THE BEST MEDICINE FOR HAIR. | |
| Regular massage of fresh amla mashed to a paste will do wonders. The application of this paste will improve the colour of hair (delay the process of greying), prevent your hair from falling and moreover has a cooling effect on the entire system. | |
| BATTLE HAIR LOSS WITH BANANAS! | |
| Dyed hair gets affected easily by the cold winter weather. Hair becomes dry and looks dull, the ends tend to split resulting in loss of hair. To prevent this you need special hair conditioners. `Banana Pack’ is one such conditioner.
To make this you need: • About half a dozen ripe bananas, two eggs and half-cup beer. • Mash the bananas well and mix with the rest. • Apply this to the hair – from the scalp to the tip. • Keep the conditioner for at least half an hour before washing it off with a mild organic shampoo. • The protein of egg and moisturising property of bananas will make the dry hair soft and silky. |
